Metrology is a group of activities related to measurement process carried out under specific conditions using measuring tools and equipment based on the international or national criteria to find and register the relationship between the real and estimated values which achieve the international system units (SI) aiming at acquiring knowledge about the extent of conformity of measuring equipment and tools with this international system according to criteria agreed upon

EOS is considered the official body in Egypt responsible for carrying out industrial metrology and measurements as it has calibration labs for measuring and measurements equipment in the field of mechanical, electrical and physical measurements.

To ensure the accuracy of reference standards at EOS which are used in calibrating equipment used in industry, they are calibrated regularly in the National Institute for Standards as it is the national body in Egypt keeping primary standards. During the last few years, EOS has updated the measurement and metrology equipment and retrained the personnel of the General Department for Industrial Metrology through external training at the laboratories of some developed countries along with training in the National Institute for Standards .Moreover, EOS has finalized the qualification process including setting up quality guides according to international criteria and is now in the process of accrediting these labs by the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC).

Based on the resolutions and regulations related to EOS establishment and organization, the responsibilities and duties of the General Department for Industrial Metrology have been determined as follows:

Providing the time criteria used in industry and complying with international system units for measurement along with taking the necessary procedures for their verification and supplying with the required possibilities and requirements for their maintenance.

Providing the required measurement equipment to carry out measurement processes in various accuracy levels needed for the different manufacturing operations.

Providing the required systems, regulations and requirements when establishing industrial metrology labs serving the industrial level in companies where EOS is considered the main reference for establishing these labs.

Contributing in providing the trained individuals available with various scientific levels to manage and operate industrial metrology labs whether at EOS premises or outside it.

Contributing and participating in the fields of international, Arab and regional cooperation in the field of industrial metrology.

Inspecting and calibrating measurement equipment along with issuing their metrology certificates and determining the validity period of metrology certificates.

Inspecting metrology certificates granted to some companies by the original labs to make sure of their validity.
