The African Organization for Standardization ( ARSO ) General Assembly has approved Egypt's proposal for establishing an African Union for Consumer Protection so as to coordinate and encourage the efforts for increasing products exchange among the continent's countries on one side and the external world on the other side as well as to ensure the safety of Africa's imports from products and goods so that the new union should concentrate on the African citizen's interests and protection. Dr.Eng. Mahmoud Eisa, EOS President and Egypt's representative in these meetings held in Dakar-Senegal from 29 January - 2 February 2007, has declared that ARSO Council members have been elected with the participation of 24 African countries in these meetings as Egypt has gained the most votes for its membership. He added that ARSO has asked Egypt to chair the African Standardization Forum and to present the Egyptian experience for harmonization with international standards and the facilities and services that could be provided by Egypt's National Quality Institute for ARSO member states. In this respect, both Swedish Standards Institute (SIS) and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency ( Sida ) have expressed their admiration of the Egyptian experience. Moreover, through Egypt's presentation, it has been referred to the issuance of Consumer Protection Law and the establishment of Consumer Protection Authority in Egypt and proposed as well to the attendees from the participating African countries for establishing an African Union for Consumer Protection for achieving the above- mentioned purpose.
